Dimmdrive is a ramdrive that acts as a virtual hard disk, caching information in memory to make it accessible in real time. It's an ideal solution for gamers but also has many other applications. It has been used in some projects which contain extended datasets, or datasets larger than the system can handle. Examples are the Internet Archive's Television News Archive and Open Street Map. Dimmdrive is able to provide read access speeds of up to 10,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1 GB/s. This makes it an excellent alternative for applications such as data analysis and large scale simulations where the performance bottleneck is the input-output subsystem. Dimmdrive can be used as a virtual hard disk on OS X, Linux, FreeBSD OSes, FreeBSD OSes with Linux or BSD-based OSes; or on Windows. Dimmdrive is free software licensed under the GNU GPLv2 (and later) with an optional proprietary license. Its source code is available at GitHub.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/24/foxconn-plant-assembly-lines_n_5922778.html It can be installed on any Apple Mac OSX Snow Leopard operating system or higher since it supports El Capitan Apple's latest operating system update to 10. 11.6. After installation, it adds a new hard drive icon to the desktop, and it will be ready to use once formatted. It supports different file systems including EXT3, EXT4 and HFS+, but not NTFS yet. It can be used as a boot device too, but cannot replace a current boot disk yet. File system limitation is set due to lack of HFS+ support in the VirtualBox version of Dimmdrive [which supports other virtual machines]. However, users should be able to do other tasks such as surfing the Internet or text editing while running other software from within Dimmdrive without any significant performance degradation. To create a new virtual drive, open the program interface, then select the desired drive size. Upon creation, users can simply drag and drop files into their drive to start working with them. Dimmdrive will cache all the requested data in memory via its RAMdisk layer. The enhanced speed comes from reading/writing data to/from RAM instead of reading/writing to/from traditional hard disks, although it does take up memory space on your computer. Ramdisk is required for Dimmdrive so if you are using other virtual machine programs such as VirtualBox or Qemu, please download the free VirtualBox Extension Pack for this function. Ramdisk is a RAM disk utility that allows you to create RAM disks on your computer. Under Windows, it makes your hard drive into a RAM disk. Under Linux, it simply just makes another logical drive of the same size of your RAM.It can be installed on any Apple Mac OSX Snow Leopard operating system or higher since it supports El Capitan Apple's latest operating system update to 10. 11.6. After installation, it adds a new hard drive icon to the desktop, and it will be ready to use once formatted.
